While metal gear games are known for their memorable villains…it’s the heroes that we have an emotional tie with long after we turn off the game. Here are my top 5 MG heroes.
5 - Solidus Snake
As the third and perfectly balanced clone of Big Boss, there were high expectations from The Patriots when it came to Solidus Snake. Unfortunately for them, he was a man who wanted nothing more than to kill the patriots and free America if not the world from their control. Now while the way he went about this was questionable, you cannot deny that Solidus gave his life fighting for something that most people would gladly fight and die for….freedom.
4 - Olga Gurlukovich
Olga may have betrayed her Russian comrades and worked for the patriots, but she did it all in the effort of saving her baby. A mother’s love knows no bounds and Olga’s actions proved that.
3 – Otacon
Few people are capable of seeing the woman they love killed in front of them and seeing their sibling die in their arms. Otacon suffered through these tragedies and was still able to put them aside to do what was needed of him. He is one of the most courages characters in Metal Gear history.
2 - Gray Fox
Frank Jaeger is the only character to be both a villain and a hero. Yeah he commited atrocities in his life, but in MGS, he gave his life to protect snake. Self sacrifice is one of the biggest qualities of a hero…and at the end of his life, frank showed us the hero within him.
This is where I would have put Solid Snake, unfortunately, I had a few words with Snake and he had this to say in regards to this countdown.

1 - The Boss
Whether you know her as Voyevoda, The Boss or The Joy, here is the most selfless character in the metal gear pantheon. She gives up her son, her unit, her emotions, her relationship with Big Boss and most of all her life all in an effort to stop Colonel Volgin, his Shagohod project and to retrieve the philosophers legacy. And while most will remember her as a monster who unleashed a nuclear threat over the world, I along with Big Boss and most gamers will remember her as a patriot who saved the world.
